A Porch in Progress

Our little front porch has been neglected in the curb appeal department, so I was so excited when my parents built me this bench for Christmas last year:

It says, "Love, Mom and Dad 2010" on the back...I love it! I stained it to match the front door and covered some pillows to soften it up.

When my son and I took a pottery class together, the potter gave me this half-round. She had it propped on a plate stand because she forgot to make a hole to hang it. I used jute to make a sling and hung it on the porch. It's probably not the best color to put right against our tan siding, but I like it.

So, this is how my porch looks this morning:

I think it's better...but it gets a lot of sun in the afternoon and evening, so I'm kicking around ideas for curtains or blinds. I found this photo yesterday and REALLY like it:

Country Living
I didn't measure yet, but I'm pretty sure my bench will fit on the short side of my porch (like the swing in the photo above). I like the idea of having curtains on the short side, knowing I can tie them open to the posts when we don't need a break from the sun. I think it would soften the space and make it feel more like a sitting area...rather than a slab of concrete with railing, as welcoming as that is.

I'm not willing to go out and make any large purchases, so this could take a while. Eventually, I may stain the concrete...but I'm thinking a small area rug could help for now. What do you think? Any ideas?

I love the idea of the curtains on your front porch and love the CL pic. Everyone is sprucing up their front porches and backyards right now and they look great! If I could get the madness in my house under control, I might branch out to my exterior at some point!!!;) love ya! Maybe I can try to call this afternoon...

Love the bench!
Love the curtain idea!
I too, am knocking that idea around for the side of my back deck. It gets super hot being on the west side!

A rug would be cute!
And maybe a cute little basket or something on the side as a little table to your bench.

I love that your parents made it and love the color and cutie-patootie pillows!

It all takes time!
And money! lol

Love it! I think curtains and a rug will really make it feel homey and soften up that concrete. It's been a while since we chatted....how are ya?!

First of all, BEAUTIFUL bench! What a great present!
I think you could make some curtains really cheap out of, what else? Drop cloths! You could also make a floor cloth for very little money out of a vinyl floor remnant. Just paint it and seal it!

Shower curtains would be great as they are made for an environment where they get wet (obviously ;) )
And to hang maybe just use a shower curtain rod. Should be a very inexpencive project then.
Anyways, better late than never right? Have you done anything yet. Don't think I have seen an update.
