These are the valances that were hanging in the kitchen until recently.
(I like them, but I wanted to lighten up the kitchen a bit.)
*Please ignore the spotty window. Apparently, I was slacking on my chores.
And the new...
It's just a fixed roman shade.
I didn't actually need it to open and close, so technically speaking...this was not complicated.
Simple, right?
This is what I saw when I first hung it up:
The sun was just accenting my less-than-perfect bottom edge. I knew I needed to add some fabric behind it, so I added a strip to the bottom and moved on to the other window.
This time, I made the bottom hem extra wide to block out the sun.
It still wasn't enough!
And I had a new problem:
Obviously, my layers didn't meet up just right, so the sun was peeking through the middle now, too. Eventually, I got it. I had to sew an additional layer of heavy fabric onto the entire back of each curtain.
My simple little shades are quite heavy.
But I like 'em...so I'm calling this one a success;)

They look like they were made by a pro! I love the fabric you used.
My shortcuts never turn out to be short, either.
They are really pretty. Love the fabric and the look of them. We have a really good saying in Norwegian for those shortcuts that ends up taking longer. I just can't translate it. Oh well. Enough procrastinating here. I have three blogposts that needs to be finished and a newsletter. I better either just give up now or get started.
Very, very pretty and look professionally made. I'm a new follower from All Things Heart & Home. :O)
Beautiful fabric! Love the design too Marie. They're just lovely. :)
The shades look great!
They look fab! Well worth the toil. love the material!
I just adore the fabric you used for your roman shades! I have to learn not to use shortcuts myself ;). I did a post on my own roman shades last week if you'd like to take a peek :).
You have been a sewing queen! I am so impressed! I bookmarked your dish mat and can't wait to make it. I am currently working on learning to make a sassy spring skirt.
This should be a hoot!
