After months and months of this project hanging over my head, I'm finally finished! Tootsie needed curtains in her bedroom. She had some purple sheers from Wal-Mart hanging in her windows. They were definitely a temporary fix. They made the room feel gloomy, and yet somehow let too much morning sun in. {"Hey, the sun is up, so it must be time for me to wake everyone in the house!"} Plus, it made her windows look purple from outside. Not my idea of curb appeal.
I bought some flat sheets from Wal-Mart a while ago. {I know...I'm not a fan of that store. But I love using inexpensive things to get the result I want. Beats paying $100 for curtains.} Two twin-sized for the single window and two full-sized for the double window. Very cheap. Very simple. I just cut strips of fabric {matching Tootsie's chair} and zig-zag stitched around the edges. Then I folded each strip in half and sewed them along the top edge of the flat sheet/curtain. My original plan was to sew a ruffle of some kind going down the center edge of each panel, but it took me months to get this far, so I think we'll let it go for a while. Less is more, right? RIGHT?
I still need to paint the walls, paint the dresser, get her a bigger bed, probably paint that, and make her a butterfly quilt. But that's another season...at least.
Tootsie found these butterflies at Michael's and loooved them. They have clips underneath, so we clipped them to the curtains.
This pink disco ball was Tootsie's pick for a Christmas decoration for her room. {She even called it a "pink disco ball". How does she know what a disco ball is?} We're letting it stay up. I really don't see Christmas when I look at this thing. She loves it because it makes pink sparkles in her room when the sun hits it :)

Great Job! These are "sew" cute! I love saving money and making things myself! Makes me feel so...accomplished and industrious! :o)
Those sheets make great curtains! I love the tab tops, and the little butterflies.
Darling curtains! They look great in the room. And I love the pink disco ball also.
Absolutely adorable! You just helped me remember that I had purchased white sheer curtains at a garage sale last year...now I want to use them somewhere in the house...hmmm! :)
Love the idea to use sheets- I had forgotten about that. Thankful for the reminder, just in time as I am thinking of replacing the curtains in my son's room.
You did a great job! :)
Great idea and they look fantastic! I am sure the Tootsie loves her new look in her room!
Hugs,
Debbie
Thanks, Becky! Good luck with your curtain project :)
Great job! I love the look of the curtains you made. I'm a big fan of sewing with flat sheets too. Unfortunately most of what you can find today are all solid colors. The pretty prints all seem to be sold as sets these days. I've made tons of napkins out of flat sheets over the years.
Best,
Susan
Adorable curtains - so clever and what a great way to be resorceful! Kudos! Can't wait to try this someday - thanks!

I saw you featured on All Things Heart and Home. What a great idea. I've made things with flat sheets over the years, but never drapes. Wow did they come out great. If you get a chance I would love for you to come check out my blog at www.diybydesign.blogspot.com. Thanks.
