In the past, I have used this Crystal deodorant. I wasn't completely happy with it and switched to Tom's of Maine in apricot. It worked pretty well, but I still wasn't thrilled. So, I whipped up my first batch of homemade deodorant. I've been using it for a few weeks, and I love it! It works better than any of the store-bought natural stuff I've tried!
UPDATE: I USED CORN STARCH THE FIRST TIME I MADE THIS, AND IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE. HOWEVER, I WOULD RECOMMEND USING ARROWROOT POWDER INSTEAD, AS IT DOESN'T ENCOURAGE THE GROWTH AND SURVIVAL OF FUNGUS LIKE CORN CAN. FOR MORE INFO ON CORN AND FUNGUS IN OUR BODIES AND DIETS, SEE THIS SITE.
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrow root powder
~5 tablespoons coconut oil
2-3 drops essential oil (optional, I used lavender)
Combine baking soda and arrow root powder in a bowl and mix with a fork. Start with about 4 tablespoons of coconut oil and add it to the baking soda mixture, working into a paste. Add essential oil, if desired, and mix. Put the mixture into a container with a lid. It will be softer or harder depending on its temperature. If it firms up a lot, just warm it with your hands before applying it.
Try to resist the urge to walk around sniffing your pits, offering them up to those around you while saying, "Smell my new deodorant!" You may get some funny looks. Don't ask me how I know.

I really have been wanting to try this. I just need to get my hands on some coconut oil (I know, I'm the only person in the blogosphere who's not using the stuff;). Where do you get yours?
Hope to call and catch up soon!
love ya!
I just popped over from the Grocery Shrink to check out your deodorant recipe. The image of walking around telling people to smell my armpits had me laughing out loud!! Do you just leave it in the container you mixed it in, or do you store it another way? If left in the bowl, how are you applying it?
Hi Carol! So glad you stopped in! At first, I just left it in the bowl and applied it with my hands. It warms up and softens between your fingertips after a few seconds and can be applied like lotion. It washes off easily, and I figure it's good moisture for my hands, too:) Then I decided to try putting it in an empty deodorant stick container. It works great as long as it doesn't get too warm where you store it. (It melts easily.) Hope you give it a try!
Hi Marie,
I found ya thru an internet rabbit trail (Grocery Shrink & Nester)I plan to try your recipe for the deodorant- I've been wanting to try something more natural to replace the store bought chemicals. Can't wait to look around your blog when I have the time. Your Max Lucado quote at the bottom there is really good. Blessings, Becky
Hi Becky! Thanks for your sweet comment! I hope you enjoy your deodorant adventure:) I'd love to hear how it turns out!
